From the Inside Out

Early morning in Iceland. Heavy overcast skies gave way to long sunrise-less morning in our last cave of the trip. Oddly enough, you want overcast skies for cave photography. Aron had us up very early today. As a result, we had the cave to ourselves for almost an hour – then the hordes started arriving. Early bird gets the shot.

Hasselbald HD100C, 24mm f/8 @ 1/6 sec, one capture. Love the dynamic range of this camera.

Ice Cave Abstract

Before I get to the classic ice cave photos, I thought I would share with you a bit of a departure from my norm. This image is an oblique view of one of the walls inside our last ice cave.

Rarely do I shoot abstracts. I am leaning that this type of shooting its good for my mind, as it requires me to “see” the scene differently. I guess it stimulates that creative side of my mind in a different way. This image is a focus stack of 7 images to preserve sharpness throughout the scene. Southeast Coast of Iceland, just before the cyclone hit later than night.

Thanks to Jim Guerard for being my Ice Buddy on the ropes.

Hasselblad H6D100c, 50mm, f/11 @ 0.7 seconds for each capture.

Peaking into the new year

While many have made their annual New Year’s resolutions, I would offer up a different approach……one of commitment.

I challenge you to commit to treating others as you would like to be treated.

I challenge you to commit to be the very best that you can be in everything that you undertake.

I challenge to you to think before you act. Take that breath of fresh air before you put your words to print.

On location, Omo Valley, Ethiopia, November 2019.

Back in Africa

I have been in Kenya now for three full days of shooting, located just outside of Amboseli National Park.  During this trip, my emphasis was to be on the massive elephants that roam this area.  Any thing else that came my way was a bonus.  For this trip I wanted to focus on some specialized shooting which required a different equipment approach.  My equipment included a full spectrum IR camera, my medium format Hasselblad, a remotely controlled camera system and my trusty Nikon D850.  I also packed my Nikon D4 for some high speed shooting, but more on that later. I configured my kit so my Nikon would be dedicated to the longer shots, while the Hasselblad would capture the wide angle to medium angle work.  The IR was set with a 16mm super wide angle to capture the massive wide open spaces that Amboseli is known for, hopefully populated with elephants.

I’ll be posting a few of the results in future blog postings so stay tuned.

Porto Natales, Chile

Porto Natales, Chile

A working fisherman captured at first light in Porto Natales, Chile. Chile. After spending time leading a workshop for Muench Workshops in the National Parks of Chile and Argentina, we made an overnight stop at this wonderful fishing town. For me, landscapes are become completely different when people are introduced into the scene. Give it a try, you just might surprise yourself.
